E-Bike Motor Drive: A Review of Configurations and Capabilities

In recent years, the mobility sector is undergoing a revolution, which resulting also into worldwide spread of light electric vehicles, such as scooters and bicycles. The increasing public concern about environmental problems further feeds this revolution. Electric-bicycles (or e-bikes) are new trend fits different riders’ needs. fact, they offer extended range ease use, allowing riders to travel in urban centres, but take longer trips. E–bikes reliable, easy ride, affordable, help people live little greener, with great benefit for their health. Many Companies (such Brose, Bafang, Bosch Shimano) developed performing e-bike motor drives. However, there not detailed general procedure choice design bikes, particular concerning machine. This review focuses on analysis motors application. First, system state art presented. pedal-assist power-on-demand typologies presented, together most popular parallel configuration less common series configuration. Further on, resistances analysed traditional bicycle then force balance vehicle example. Lithium-ion battery management discussed, presenting schemes typical performances. Concerning electrical machine, some electromagnetic approaches described, data commercial motors. Finite element model carried out experimental tests presented highlight capabilities. Different control strategies compared, including innovative solutions trends.
